  • What does SignOn do?
    • Our goal is to actively engage the Deaf in the ASL learning process, create a bridge between the Deaf and hearing communities, and provide virtual immersion for all ASL learners. SignOn provides a two-way live video portal on our proprietary web-based platform that connects ASL learners to live Deaf Ambassadors for 30-minute learning sessions creating true immersion in ASL.
    • By engaging the Deaf community in the ASL learning process, the Deaf are able to help shape and form the way ASL is taught and understood by the learner; spread awareness of Deaf culture and ASL to those who are new to the language.
  • Are all of the Ambassadors Deaf?
    • Yes, all of our Ambassadors identify as Deaf. We believe it is vital to practice and connect with Deaf individuals - a critical component for learning ASL. In fact, students that have used SignOn during college level ASL classes have shown a 37% increase in test scores.
  • What problem does SignOn address?
    • ASL is now considered a foreign language; students learning ASL were missing a critical component of their curriculum - immersion - creating a barrier to education and connectivity between the hearing and Deaf communities. SignOn fills this void by giving all ASL learners the ability to fully grasp the language through authentic live interactions with Deaf individuals. In one study, SignOn increased students' average test results by 37%. And most importantly, every ASL learner becomes comfortable interacting with a variety Deaf individuals in real-life situations.
  • How great is the need?
    • SignOn realized that there was a gap in the learning and acquisition of American Sign Language. True immersion was the missing link.
      • All spoken foreign languages have a country, yet there is no "Deaf Country" for immersion in American Sign Language.
      • 90-95% of deaf children are born to hearing parents.
      • 73% of the Deaf Population are either under or unemployed.
  • How old do I need to be to use SignOn or are there age requirements for SignOn?
    • We strive to serve a wide variety of individuals and all age groups, from students in grades K-12 to students in college level courses; from families with newly identified deaf children to newly deaf senior citizens; from students training to become Certified Sign Language Interpreters to Interpreters trying to get recertified.
    • An adult (parent, teacher, support staff) must be present when minors are in a session individually.
  • How do SignOn live sessions work?
    • Unique to SignOn is our scheduling system with an integrated live video platform. Our sessions can be scheduled at the learner's convenience, 7 days a week from 8am-10pm EST, and held from virtually anywhere. This allows the learner to choose from 21 different sessions each day. The learner will always be connected with a live Deaf Ambassador - never merely an interpreter or a hearing person suggesting they're Deaf. After a session is scheduled, the learner will connect to a live Deaf Ambassador on their chosen date using the SignOn platform.
    • Once logged into our website, the learner will be able to see a large video feed of their Deaf Ambassador and a smaller "thumbnail" video of themselves in the upper righthand corner. Below that is an interactive text-chat box that is used to provide assistance should any language gap arise during a session. Interactions throughout the session allow for practice and improved retention of learned skills. After the session is finished, the learner will receive written feedback from their Deaf Ambassador.

When canceling or changing within 48 hours of your session, there is a $9 rescheduling fee. Call customer service at 313-539-3246 to make this request.
  • What happens if I forget to change or cancel my session?
    • Unfortunately, if you fail to cancel or change your session, you will lose those 30 minutes from your dashboard. Your Ambassador arrives on time and stays throughout the entire session whether you login or not. Cancellation policies are listed in the Terms and Conditions when you initially register.
  • Can I request a specific Ambassador?
    • No, it is important for ASL learners to be exposed to multiple Ambassadors since each person has their own individual style of signing. Our virtual immersion program is geared toward engaging our learners with a variety of Ambassadors to improve signing confidence, learn about regional signs and various backgrounds (SignOn Ambassadors hail from across the country) and experience true immersion.
  • What is your Ambassador screening process?
    • We contract with a growing network of more than 35 caring, qualified and enthusiastic Deaf ASL Ambassadors. We only hire the Deaf to become SignOn Ambassadors to ensure a true and high-quality immersion experience. We rigorously screen all of our Ambassadors via an extensive 6-step interview process, detailed reviews of experience and credentials, and a required score of 3+ or higher on the American Sign Language Proficiency Interview (ASLPI).

    • In learning any new language, not k-nowing a certain word or sign should not stop communication. You can either fingerspell the word or use SignOn's text box to spell the word to facilitate the conversation.
